A Semi-submersible Mussel Farm (SMF) to grow mussels in the North Sea. Mussel production in the Netherlands has declined significantly over recent years. An agreement between the government and the mussel sector has led to a reduction of traditional bottom-culture farming in the Wadden Sea, in favour of more sustainable cultivation methods. Meanwhile, near shore space is increasingly limited due to protected Natura 2000 areas, fishing activities, sand extraction, shipping lanes, and other competing uses. To address these challenges, OOS has developed an innovative solution: a semi-submersible
Mussel Farm designed for offshore deployment. Powered by renewable energy, the OOS SMF
is engineered to withstand harsh open-sea conditions while ensuring optimal protection of the
mussel cultures.
